How to Network Like a Pro

CareerWoman_400Networking is the bane of many a job seeker’s existence, but it doesn’t have to be. Just think of it as a series of relationships: from schoolmates to old coworkers to that nice friend-of-a-friend you met who works at your dream company, networking just means forming and maintaining connections with people who know you best. You need people in your corner, loyal folks who will think of you when a job opens up at their office.

Here are some tips for expanding your network. Before you know it, you’ll be in a better place.

Give Compliments
Giving genuine compliments is one of the key parts of being a better communicator and networker. As Andrea Nierenberg says in her book Nonstop Networking, “When you listen to someone carefully, often they will mention something about which they are proud. Think for a moment and find a way to acknowledge the person’s achievement.” When you demonstrate in an intimate way that you are paying attention to what the person is saying, that person will remember you. Practice giving one compliment a day.

Embrace LinkedIn
Don’t knock LinkedIn; it’s a free way to maintain professional connections with others who might help you advance in your career. While it’s easy to ignore it or passively accept other people’s invitations, you should really use it to your best advantage. Think of it as a professional calling card. It’s going to be the first impression that many people have of you, so it’s worth it to invest some time and energy into making it count.

Follow up Smarter
You have 24 hours after initial meeting to follow up with a new contact. Whether it’s through sending a quick email, offering help, or connecting on LinkedIn, be sure to follow through and get it done. Remember that you’re not just forming a relationship with one person, you’re getting in touch with her whole network, too. Following up is the first step to truly widening your circle of potential contacts.

Ask for Advice
People actually like being asked for advice. It’s a great way to have a conversation with someone and learn information that could be useful for your career. Sending an email asking for advice that makes it easy for the person to respond will ensure that the communication is not ignored.

Network When You’re Happy in Your Job
My mom always said, “It’s easiest to get a job when you already have one.” This advice still holds true today. You’ll have more to offer potential networking contacts, and they’ll be more attracted to forming a relationship with you. In addition, companies want to hire top talent, and the perception is that those people are probably already gainfully employed. When you do go through the interview process, you will have more confidence and greater leverage. Nobody wants to be around, or hire, someone who is desperate.

Say Yes to What’s Most Important (By Saying No to What Isn’t)

John O'Leary, On Fire by John O'Leary, relationship advice, importance of setting boundaries to make time for family, relationship advice from John O'LearyMy wife feels I do not put her before others. And she’s right: I do say yes to everyone. I retired early from a successful career so I could spend more time with my wife and children. Then about 18 months ago, I began volunteering for a nonprofit and now I find myself doing everything for the men and women we serve. How can I set better boundaries to make more time for my wife and kids? – P

John O’Leary: P, thanks for your great question and impact on the community. If we are honest about it, your question is one with which we all struggle.

Several years ago I had a meeting with a successful business owner. He runs a large and growing private business with all the challenges that come with it. He’s also is married, has five children, and significant responsibilities in the community. I asked how he did it all.

The gentleman stood up, walked over the a bookshelf, brought back a simple framed picture of a hierarchy chart. He said this keeps him focused on what to do next, and what to do later.

At the very top, for him, was God. Then his wife. Below her name were the names of their five children. Then his own name. Then work, community, friends. The final line was titled “everything and everybody else.”

He said this simple personal organizational chart freed him to say “yes” to things and people who are most important and “no” to things that are less so.

Frequently in life we can sprint around, do everything for everybody, serve, impact… and discover near the end that we were leaning our ladder against the wrong wall of success. My encouragement to you is to keep serving, keep inspiring, keep living your mission, but (you knew it was coming!) say “Yes” to your bride, “YES” to your kids, and “YES” to yourself first. Far from making you selfish, it will make you even more effective in the incredibly important work you do.

Williams-Sonoma Recipe: Basic Pizza Dough

Williams-Sonoma pizza dough recipe, Chuck Williams, Williams-Sonoma Cooking for HomeThis all-purpose homemade dough is perfect for a pizza party or easy dinner with toppings of your choice. From William-Sonoma Cooking at Home.

*Makes 1 1/3 lb. dough

1 tablespoon active dry yeast
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons (7 fl. oz.) lukewarm water (110°F)
2 3/4 cups (14 oz.) all-purpose (plain) flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

In a small bowl, combine the yeast and the lukewarm water and let stand until bubbles start to rise, about 5 minutes.

In a bowl, stir together the flour and salt and form into a mound. Make a well in the center, and add the yeast mixture to the well. Using a fork and stirring in a circular motion, gradually pull the flour into the yeast mixture. Continue stirring until a rough dough forms.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. As you work, sprinkle additional flour on the work surface, 1 tablespoon at a time, only if needed to prevent sticking. Form the dough into a ball. Oil a clean bowl with the oil, place the dough in it, and turn to coat all sides. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place until the dough is doubled in volume, 1–2 hours.

To shape the dough, turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface and press flat. Using your hands, begin to press it out gently into the desired shape. Then place one hand in the center of the dough and pull, lift, and stretch the dough with the other hand, gradually working your way all around the edge, until it is the desired thickness, about 1/4 inch for a crusty pizza base and 1/2 inch for a softer one. Flip the dough over from time to time as you work with it. Alternatively, roll out the dough with a rolling pin. The dough should be slightly thinner in the middle than at the edge. Lift the edge of the pizza to form a slight rim around its circumference.

Transfer the dough to a baker’s peel or a baking sheet, cover with a kitchen towel, and let the dough rise again until almost doubled, about 20 minutes. Top and bake as directed in individual recipes.

How To Find Real Love This Year

online dating, young couple, looking for love, How To Find Love for Real, Best City For Love, Geeky Guys Are Hot, Fine Line Between Dating and FriendshipSwiping right and left has changed the face of dating forever. But the latest research shows that there is room for improvement: No matter how much technology has changed our lives, we’re still figuring out how to meet (and keep!) the right person. Here is the latest data on the culture of mating in the face of an ever-increasing global focus on science, mobility, and easy hookups.

Best City for Love
San Francisco is the best city for singles, according to a poll by Zillow. A full 39% of the population is unattached, so your chances for interacting with a suitable potential partner is high. According to a Gallup Healthways poll, it’s also one of the fittest cities in the US, and it’s not just the twists of Lombard Street that will get you in shape. It’s easy to get out of the city to one of the many national parks and beaches nearby. If your ideal date is strolling through a redwood grove perched next to the Pacific Ocean, then the city by the bay might be the right fit for you.

Geeky Guys Are Hot
Women prefer nerds to jocks: In a survey by the Crucial Tech-Know Meter Survey, 45% of women felt that technology was the most desirable occupation for a spouse, versus the 5% who want to say “I do” to a football player. And if they’re in glasses the stats get even better: Almost 90% find men sexy in specs. The days of Urkel are long gone. In 2016, geeks rule.

Clean Apartments Are a Turn-on
Details matter. In a survey of single people by Rent.com, 82% of renters are paying attention to the cleanliness of a date’s apartment. And don’t forget to scrub the toilet: Almost half of respondents say that a sparkling bathroom was the most important part of the apartment. And while you’re at it, ditch the dud roommate. Respondents reported that if they felt unwelcome by others in the home, they didn’t want to return.

The Fine Line between Dating and Friendship
Going to a concert with a crush? He might be taking you on a date, but you’d never know. Sixty-nine percent of respondents to a poll by ChristianMingle and JDate don’t know whether or not they’re on a date when they go out with someone they like. Since we are long past the days of codified rules about courtship, everyone’s confused. Try nuzzling up or touching his arm to get a vibe. If you get the cold shoulder, you’ll know the answer.

Words with More-Than-Friends
We all have a mental list of words that set our teeth on edge. But according to game maker Zynga, when trying to be sexy while playing word games, “thrust” makes the most people just feel awkward. Add “thrust” to “bae,” and you’ll agree that there are some words that are best left unsaid. Lover.

8 Myths About Gluten

Peter Osborne, No Grain No Pain, Celiac disease, eight myths about Gluten, gluten-free dietAll progress starts with the unvarnished truth, but until you deal with the truth right in front of your nose, you cannot move forward. My mission is to shine a big light on the myths perpetuated about gluten (out of ignorance, an unwillingness to acknowledge error, or for mercenary reasons), reveal the truth based on the latest research and the experiences of thousands of people, and change the message. That message is based on a definition of gluten that hasn’t evolved over more than sixty years! Only when you understand and accept that truth will you be able to rid yourself of pain and restore your health. From No Grain, No Pain.

Let’s look at the eight myths and eight truths that underlie the No-Grain, No-Pain program.

Myth 1: Gluten is found only in wheat, barley, and rye—and sometimes oats.
Not true! Gluten is not a single protein found in a few grains; rather, it refers to a huge family of proteins. And only one protein, gliadin, found in wheat, barley, and rye, has been extensively studied. Each grain has one or more types of gluten proteins. A recent study identified four hundred new forms of gluten, forty of which were more damaging than the form of gluten for which doctors most commonly test.

Myth 2: If you are gluten-sensitive, you can safely eat whole grain substitutes such as corn and rice.
Not true! All grains contain some form of gluten. Research shows that corn (and corn oil) also produces numerous intestinal and health problems for the gluten sensitive. Remember, corn is a grain, not a vegetable—and it is in thousands of “Frankenfoods,” aka junk-food products. For a list of hidden corn–based ingredients, visit glutenfreesociety.org /hidden-corn-based-ingredients.

Myth 3: Eating dairy products is safe because they are gluten free.
Not true! It has been found that milk “looks” like gluten to your immune system, so if you’re gluten sensitive your immune system may react to it.

Myth 4: If you don’t have Celiac disease, you can eat all the gluten you want.
Not true! Celiac disease is just the tip of the gluten-sensitivity iceberg and only one of many autoimmune and other conditions it can cause.

Myth 5: Gluten sensitivity is the same thing as celiac disease.
Not true! Most people (and most health professionals) think gluten affects just the gut. They don’t realize that gluten sensitivity is in fact indicated by a host of other symptoms, from headaches to muscle pain, arthritis, and hypothyroidism. Celiac disease is only one manifestation of gluten sensitivity, which is a genetic state that can express itself through multiple painful disorders when triggered by gluten.

Myth 6: Lab testing for gluten sensitivity is accurate.
Not true! There is no lab test for all of the different forms of gluten. When doctors test blood for gluten reactions, the test measures only one type of gluten found in wheat, barley, and rye, creating a potential false sense of security. Even the most progressive lab in the world only looks at a dozen distinct gluten proteins.

Myth 7: Eating a gluten-free diet is dangerous if you’re not gluten sensitive.
Not true! In fact, if one member of the household is gluten sensitive, getting (and keeping) that family member on a gluten-free diet works best if the whole family supports him/her by eating the same way. There is no scientific evidence that humans need to eat grains.

Myth 8:Gluten-free processed foods are safe.
Not true! These foods are usually full of grains (and soy) to which gluten-sensitive people are likely to react. Don’t eat these foods if you value your health.
