See the Movie, Read the Book (Yes, in That Order)

MovieIn my opinion it’s OK to see a movie then read the book, instead of the other way around. (I could feel some eyebrows shooting up as I typed that sentence.) Yes, I am a publisher. Yes, I believe in reading, I believe in promoting reading, and I believe there’s no other experience quite like reading a book. But to say there’s only one way to experience and interpret a story is selling any story, whatever medium it’s presented in, short.

There are plenty of good children’s books that have been made into movies. And there are plenty of wonderful movies for kids that are born not of a book, but from a script.

I have seen many books turned into movies that make me cringe. Perhaps they glamorized a character who was purposefully written as plain, or they changed a melancholy ending to a fairytale happily-ever-after. Those movies disappoint me because they aren’t interpretations that ring true, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t equally valid stories. I like discussing those differences. Was the character changed from a Judi Dench-aged woman to a Jennifer Lawrence-aged woman because they felt J-Law could sell a film better? (If so, that’s actually a discussion worth having, especially with kids—girls and boys.) Or did they change the character because the screenwriter saw the story through the lens of a different age of woman? And if that’s the case, why? Looking at the choices that are made when adapting a book to a movie, a movie to a play, a film to a television show, are endlessly fascinating. The medium will dictate certain choices (how a narrator will work in a TV show, for instance, which might be different from a book) of course, but the many decisions and adaptations that are made are rich for talking about how the story is interpreted differently.

I’m not sure I love the “If you like this, you can’t then like this” logic. If you are a diehard Harry Potter book fan, why couldn’t you like the movies, too? And if you came to Harry Potter by way of the movies, I think it’s great to then pick up the books. I see nothing wrong with toggling. In researching summer reading I was surprised to see many reading lists included a book and a movie, with the assignment asking kids to compare and contrast. I don’t think the goal of these assignments was to put one less book on the list and substitute it for a movie. I think it’s a really clever way to give kids an easy entrance to jump into what was the same, what was different and why, in their opinion, it mattered.

As a publisher who oversees our media tie-ins my group adapts television shows and movies all the time. We look at it as another, sometimes enhanced, way for kids to immerse themselves in the story. While we generally follow the plot of the movie pretty closely there’s often room to go into details that the movie may have omitted. Sometimes we can get into a character’s head a little more and sometimes we can even tell a subplot that had to be cut from the final film version. Even if the book pretty much follows the storyline to a T, I would argue that by its very nature reading a book is going to be a different way to experience the story than watching a movie.

As a publisher would I rather my kid read a Newbery Award winner than the latest summer movie hit? Well, yes, when push comes to shove. But that’s like saying I only read books reviewed in The New Yorker and don’t sneak in some reads that wouldn’t make it up from their mailroom, let alone cross the book editor’s desk. I do read those books. My kids do, too. It’s all about that eternal search for balance.

These days I don’t have as much time to read for pleasure as I’d like. I finally saw the movie Gone Girl, which the rest of the world saw a decade ago. I loved it. And since it had been sitting on my shelf taunting me since people started buzzing about it a million years ago, I also just finished the book.

A few great books that were made into movies in the past year or are about to be released. For what it’s worth The Great Gilly Hopkins is one of my favorite books of all time:

1 Easy, Harmless Way to Keep Millennial Employees Happy

career-woman_400In one study, 40 percent of Generation Me’ers (20 and 30-somethings) believed they should be promoted every two years, no matter what their performance. Here’s why you might consider creating more rungs on the ladder of career advancement, so promotions occur more often–for the young people who actually deserve them, of course. From Generation Me.

Many companies want to hire ambitious young employees—and they should. But managers also don’t want to be stuck with employees who are overconfident and entitled. It’s sometimes difficult to distinguish the two, especially in a brief job interview. Management professor Paul Harvey suggests asking job candidates, “Do you feel you are generally superior to your coworkers/classmates, and if so, why?” If the candidate says yes but struggles to explain why—or offers vague reasons—that might indicate entitlement.

In the spoof Millennials training video, a young worker does “what was asked of her—nothing more, nothing less. She expects a raise and a promotion,” explains the narrator. The young woman hands her report to the manager and waits. “Thanks…,” says the manager, and pauses, remembering her “training.” She then finishes, “Thanks, junior executive manager of data consulting!” The young employee smiles excitedly. “Is that better than assistant manager of junior accounts? Thank you! I’m going to go call my parents!”

Silly, yes, but a good idea is embedded here. Instead of having promotions and title changes every three to five years, some companies now add more levels that can be achieved in six months to a year. For a generation raised on “everyone gets a trophy” and instant gratification, more promotions at a faster pace is attractive. If the promotions are given for outstanding performance, not just showing up, having more steps on the ladder has no real downside, so it’s a win-win.

Even in a company with faster promotions, however, it’s unlikely that the new hire will be CEO in five years—and he or she needs to know that. Sometimes it’s helpful for a young employee with a few years of experience to explain the usual career paths to new hires. Aiming high is good, but they also need to know that they will not start at the top.

For GenMe: I am not suggesting you become less ambitious, just more clear-eyed. Keep thinking about how to do things better, and keeping thinking about how you can get ahead. Just don’t expect it to happen overnight. Tim Urban, whose piece on “Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy” went viral online, gives this advice: “Stop thinking you’re special. The fact is, right now, you’re not special. You’re another completely inexperienced young person who doesn’t have all that much to offer yet. You can become special by working really hard for a long time.” I’d go a little less extreme—you can make a contribution in your job right now, and you can keep working toward your goals. But Urban is right that building a career takes time. For all but the lucky few, it does not happen overnight. And that’s okay—especially if you like what you do, getting there can be the fun part.

How To Get the Best Out of Your Student

MotherSonConference_400Set a good example for your student both inside and outside the classroom. Here’s how, from The End of Molasses Classes: 101 Extraordinary Solutions for Parents and Teachers.

Some of the things our teachers and parents do are actually easy, but they send a message to our students and have a wonderful impact:

1. Don’t gossip. If you are spending your time complaining about people who are gossiping, you’re still gossiping. Stop.

2. Show up on time. Whether you are a staff member showing up for work or a parent showing up to pick your child up from school or to attend a meeting with your child’s teacher, it is imperative that you are on time. When you aren’t on time you send a message that you don’t respect the time of others, and it can be perceived as extremely rude and send the wrong message to children. Ms. Mosley shows up at RCA before 7:00 a.m. each morning. She has never been late in her four years at RCA. She said she knows that children learn their behaviors from watching adults, and she is sending a message to them that being on time every day shouldn’t be something that is unusual; it is expected.

3. Return forms to the school in a timely manner. We hate having to track down parents for signed permission slips, report cards, and other items. Turn them back in the next day, not only to help the school but also to teach your children about the value of being prompt and on time with assignments.

4. Pick up after yourself. Teachers and parents should stop to pick up even the smallest pieces of trash in their school. Work hard to keep it spotless and show your students, especially the ones who tend to be cluttered and disorganized, the strength of spirit and feeling of success that can be born out of living and working in a clean and organized environment. I am sure most parents don’t even think of picking up trash as they walk through the school hallways or parking lot, but if they did the message it would send to others would be powerful.

5. Proofread. Teachers should correct grammar and triple check emails and letters that they send home to parents. Show that each email you send is worthy of being checked thoroughly. Parents should make sure their emails to teachers are respectful and appreciative.

6. Dress your best. No wrinkles, rips, or sloppy clothing, especially for parents when they go to their child’s school. Your child wants you to look sharp when you pick him up from school. He wants to be proud of you and show others that his parent is a professional.
