The Total Grilling Manual Recipe: Classic Sangria

1 apple, cored, skin on, sliced into thin wedges
1 orange, rind on, sliced into thin wedges, large seeds removed
3–4 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar
¾ cup (6 fl oz/180 ml) orange juice
1/3 cup (3 fl oz/80 ml) brandy
1 bottle (24 oz/750 ml) dry Spanish red wine
Ice to chill

MUDDLE Add apple, orange, and sugar to a large glass pitcher, setting aside a few segments for garnish, and muddle (use the back of a wooden spoon if you don’t have a muddler). Put some muscle into it for a solid 30 seconds or so. Add orange juice and brandy, and muddle again to combine.

MIX Add red wine and stir, then taste and adjust the flavor as desired.

SERVE Add ice and stir once more to chill. Garnish with orange or apple segments to serve.
