  • 5 Last-Minute, Modern Classic Gifts for Mom

gift_400Moms are notorious for not doing nice things for themselves. They take care of both the little and not-so-little kids in their lives, often neglecting their own comforts for the sake of others. It’s time to do something really special for the woman who gave you life. Instead of settling for the traditional flowers or chocolate, why not give her something that she would never get for herself? A small indulgence can transport her to a different world, one in which she can actually has time for pampering. Luxury looks good on everyone.

    Ceramic mixing bowls
Your mom has probably been using the same stainless-steel mixing bowls since you were born. Update them with a pair of nesting stoneware bowls. Pretty enough for kitchen-to-table use, these bowls will make her feel like her home in the ‘burbs is a Tuscan farmhouse.

    High-Tech Keychain
If your mom is getting older, or perhaps just as occasionally absentminded as her child (ahem), the Bluetooth tracking tag will ensure that she never loses her keys again. The ingenious little device also works in reverse: It will sound an alert on your cell phone at the touch of a button. This one is pretty in rosewood, too.

    Jacobsen Sea Salt Gift Set
    Specialty Salt Set
Remember the brownies mom used to bake? Pay her back by gifting the tools to make her adult brownies better. Flavored salts can transform the everyday baked good. Stumptown espresso, vanilla bean, and pinot noir are just a few options that will elevate her next batch to something really special. You can even DIY it and make flavored salt yourself. Put it in a pretty little mason jar, and your mom will love the extra personal touch.

    LL Bean Slippers
    Perfect Slippers
Nothing beats a pair of cozy slippers on a winter morning. These always-fashionable camp moccasins will make her feet sing with pleasure. She can treat her feet well first thing in the morning and stay comfy all day with these bad boys—even if she has to take the dog out or get in the car.

    Fresh Oval Soap
    The Best Soap
These vegetable soaps are as beautiful as they are fabulous. The lather is a soft, moisturizing foam with tiny bubbles that will make your mom feel like she is at a spa, not in her own shower. The fragrances are all lovely but subtle and every one is a winner. Base your choice on which beautiful wrapping you like best. These huge bars last a long time, so mom will congratulate you on getting a good value, too.

  • How to Be a Rock Star Mom

Pat_Benatar_400Being a touring rock musician and raising kids seem like two impossible competing tasks. However, it can be done: the key is to put family first. Find out more lessons learned by leading women raising children in What I Told My Daughter: Lessons From Leaders on Raising the Next Generation of Empowered Women.

    From Pat Benatar, Singer-songwriter:

Plenty of nights on the road I would be breast-feeding right up until a few minutes before I had to hit the stage. You learned to be fast on your feet as a performer, so when showtime came, I tucked my boob back in and went onstage to be sexy. My record company at the time was relentless about pressuring us to tour more, and they warned me I’d better be skinny again when I emerged after having Haley. It was exhausting.

The only person I knew who could relate to my experience back then was Chrissie Hynde, the leader of The Pretenders, who had her second baby about four months before I had Haley in 1985. We ran into each other at an awards show and I asked her how she was doing. She said, “I’m not,” and I knew exactly what she meant.

Thankfully, by the time I had Hana in 1994, the world had changed a lot for women in my profession. Spyder [husband Neil Giraldo] and I happily kept doing our own thing with the family. When it was time to hit the road, the girls would make themselves at home on the tour bus, decorating their bunks on the bus with posters and stickers. To them, it was like going to summer camp. For the longest time, they thought everybody’s mom was a singer and that all kids spent their summers touring the country. They got to see so much, and learn so much, on our journeys. The only time our girls were left with nannies was when we were onstage—otherwise we were full-time Mom and Dad.

  • 3 Ways to Bring Compassion into the Workplace

Businessman_Heart_400Here’s a business paradox: Kindness breeds organizational success. It’s a paradox because when we think about how to optimize creativity, productivity, and other metrics of high performing organizations, compassion rarely enters the conversation. We talk instead about more tangible metrics: things like increasing efficiency, billable hours, sales numbers, and other more quantifiable measures.

But leading firms are beginning to learn that compassion plays a powerful role in driving successful business outcomes (further detailed in my book, Start Here). Just think about what happens when the opposite of compassion becomes the norm in an organization. Without compassion, feelings of irritation, reactivity, anger, and defensiveness become the norm. And this leads to near constant emotional drama, suspicion, turf wars, and chronic stress.

The problem, of course, is that this kind of corporate atmosphere isn’t just bad for the mental and emotional health of employees. It’s bad for business. As anyone who has ever been a part of a work culture like this knows, all of this emotional drama consumes a massive amount of mental and emotional energy. When you feel betrayed by your co-worker or worried that your boss doesn’t respect you, it can be really hard to stay focused on the tasks that need to get done.

Compassion, however, creates a different kind of corporate culture. When we approach our work with kindness instead of defensiveness, we experience greater empathy and curiosity.

And, not surprisingly, compassion leads to better business outcomes. A recent study done by Wharton Management Professor Sigal Barsade, for example, found that compassion in the workplace led to:

    • Reduced employee withdraw from work
    • Reduced absenteeism
    • Increased employee satisfaction
    • Increased teamwork and collaboration

It’s clear that compassion can radically shift the culture of a company in ways that lead to optimal performance both on the individual and organizational level.

So how can you bring compassion into your workplace? Here are a few simple first steps:

Greet Everyone Like an Old Friend
The tip is simple and yet has the power to change your day and the day of everyone you come into contact with. It comes from the Dalai Lama. When visiting the U.S., he used to imagine everyone he met was old friend.

You can use this practice as you go through each day at work. Each day, after all, you probably encounter numerous people: the people on your team, the people in the elevator, the people you interact with over the phone. The tip here is to shift the way you interact with these people. In each of these encounters, imagine you really were meeting an old friend for the first time in a long time. Imagine how excited you would be to see them.

This simple shift in your mindset will change the way you interact with everyone you encounter. It may light up your face with a smile. It may lead you to say “thank you” with greater depth and sincerity. And it may also change the experience of everyone you come into contact with. This one genuine moment of human connection might just make their day.

    Walking into the Office
When it comes to compassion, walking into the office in the morning is a key moment. If you feel irritated and rushed, you’re likely to be anything but kind to the next few people you see and the rest of your day will tend to follow a similar pattern. So see if you can use walking into work as a cue to help you build the habit of feeling compassion.

As you get off the elevator, walk through the front door, or open your computer, make a habit of shifting your attention to compassion. All you have to do here is think of all the people you will interact with during the day and say to yourself, “May you be happy and at peace.” You can even put a sticky note on your desk or computer to help you remember.

When the Going Gets Tough, Breathe
One of the best ways to be more compassionate at work is to catch yourself whenever you slip into irritation or defensiveness. During the course of a day or a week this is bound to happen. The key is to become aware of it. Without awareness, after all, you tend to react – to say something you don’t mean or become overly defensive.

The tip here is simple. When you feel yourself in this reactive mode, stop and take a single breath. Breath in for four counts and out for four counts. Then decide what to say or how to reply to the email that just triggered you. This small space opens the door to a more compassionate, less reactive, way of responding to intense workplace situations.

These are the things you can do today to bring a spirit of compassion into your workplace. As you will soon see, this shift is contagious. The more you shift your state of mind to kindness, the more you will experience others doing the same. It’s a shift that improves your wellbeing, the wellbeing of others, and the productivity and efficiency of the entire organization.
